The Winter Quiet Stillness Is Here...Finally
Happy New Year!
Now that the bright lights of the holidays are behind us, we can inhabit winter as nature shows us - by creating time for quiet and stillness.
This sounds good, but sitting in quiet stillness can often evoke the constant chatter we want to escape from. So, how can we find relief? The breath.
In the autumn, the lungs were at an energetic high tide. We did a lot of breath work and continue to, as how we breathe affects how we think.
During winter, the kidneys are at the energetic forefront. The kidneys are part of the water element, and so is the brain. The kidneys and brain are energetically related. When kidney chi is weak, our memory and thinking are weak.
The lungs play a vital role in nourishing the kidneys; they collect chi while the kidneys retain it. When the kidney energy is in harmony, we experience enhanced willpower and endurance throughout the winter and can tap into our intuition and allow it to guide us.
The Sage is the archetype associated with the winter water element. The sage master has a deep understanding and broad awareness informed by intuition.
Awareness is known as intelligence beyond the intellect, and it can be cultivated through meditation. Quiet stillness.
Stillness is essential in nature. For the sprouting energy of spring to occur and inspiration to arise, the seed needs to be still and quiet in the winter.
Anchoring each day with breathwork establishes a serene environment for the mind. When the mind finds stillness, intuitive insights can emerge.
Our minds are stored in the brain and throughout the entire body. Hence, the phrase "Our issues are in our tissues" is valid and needs to be addressed. That's why yoga precedes meditation: to clear the turbidity of our minds through deep breathing while strengthening and stretching out the tightness in our bodies that prevents us from sitting comfortably in stillness.
This is a practice worth pursuing, as it's profoundly healing to the dis-ease that starts as stress, and if not tended to, results in much more serious emotional and physical diseases.
We are ultimately responsible for our own healing.
