This Is Happening For You!
My friend, Richard Sloane, shared something potent for me during the Mindfulness Meditation course he led last weekend. He shared the story about when he received his cancer diagnosis and the victim mentality he initially went through, thinking, "Why is this happening to me?"
We can all relate to this. Whenever something difficult is going on, especially a severe diagnosis, it can feel like we are being punished for some unknown reason.
But he then shared a phrase that shifted that mindset—this isn't happening to you; it's happening FOR you.
This difficult time is happening for your evolution.
That phrase has shifted my perspective on the challenges I experience. This is happening for me!
Wow, what a complete perspective shift.
Most of us can recall how difficult times are the most potent times of radical transformation, being the mud from which the lotus of wisdom grows.
But when we're going through it, it's tough to see the wisdom and not fall victim to 'why me?'.
I know that when I was going through years of chronic debilitating back pain, I was entirely in a victim mindset. Reflecting on it, I see how it led me to yoga and meditation, which has provided me with more freedom in my body and mind than I could have imagined.
It also led me to teach yoga and meditation, which has been deeply fulfilling. I would not have reached this place without that long and grueling experience, and now I can authentically help others from going through the mud that produced the lotus.
So, what if we shift our perspective on any current challenge to knowing this is happening for us?
Even tragedies that we have to endure - are happening for us.
This puts us in the seat of the observer of our life, pulling back to a bigger perspective and trusting that there is a silver lining to the worst scenarios if we are patient and open enough to remember that we are spiritual beings having the FULL human experience.
As Wayne Dyer reminds us, no one knows enough to be pessimistic.
I've been sitting with this teaching and shift of perspective, finding it a fresh new way of seeing my problems. How does this land for you? I'd love to hear if this has as much of a profound effect on you as it does on me.
Namaste,
Maggie
