Learning Something New Keeps Our Minds BRIGHT!
The seasonal shift is in the air. School starting has an imprint on our psyche.
Late summer shifting into fall has an energetic affect that stimulates our intellect. We are inspired to learn and/or create a disciplined routine.
According to Chinese medicine's wisdom, each season's energetic vibration (based on how the earth is positioned to the sun) relates to a specific consciousness or spirit.
During the late summer, the consciousness is referred to as Yi, which means acquiring knowledge. This refers to our intellect.
Therefore, this time of year is the easiest to learn new things.
It's no wonder school starts this time of year and fundamental classes are taught in the morning. This is the time of the day and the season that is optimal to absorb new information.
Intellectual energy is running strong, especially during 7-11 am, when the stomach and spleen energies are in high tide.
Our stomach and spleen energy (or Qi), is directly related to our intellect!
When we digest our food well we can think easier, and retain information better.
As we age, we often stay comfortable with what we know.
We get into our routines and settle into our habits. This creates comfort but also creates atrophy of the mind.
One of the best things we can do as we age is to keep learning new things. As my teacher often says, "Get good at being bad at things". Typically there's a learning curve when acquiring something new.
We may get frustrated, as learning a new language or instrument is always a humbling experience.
Humility is where grace can be found. It brings us back to the humble beginner's mind and lights up our brains! It keeps us sharp and bright.
Consider what you're interested in and start to learn more about it. Immerse yourself, to keep the mind young and vibrant, which will also contribute to your well-being.
And if yoga lights you up, consider taking the 200-hour teacher training, starting this Saturday 9/16, or the Master's Path, starting 10/21 for yogis who want to go further and learn more!
These trainings will provide inner growth as well as a strong, flexible body and a calm centered mind.
From my heart to yours~
Namaste,
Maggie
